Locating a Loc8tor

I recently found out about a clever device that could also be used for tracking your pet.

It's called the Loc8tor and it's a simple RF tracker that can be used to locate a variety of objects -- your wallet, your car keys, and of course the most precious object of all: Your cat!

The transmitter is small enough to be attached to your cat's collar. According to the product info, the device is good for 600 feet with a direct line of sight.

I've found some good deals for this cat Loc8ator product on eBay:

Each tag including batteries weighs less than 5g (0.2 ounces) so that is certainly light enough for a cat to carry.

If you don't have an eBay account you can register for FREE and then you'll be able to snag all those great bargains!

You can also buy the Loc8tor Plus Pack at Shop.com.The Loc8tor has a Locate mode and an Alert mode. The Locate mode is used to find possessions, children, and of course -- pet cats. It has directional audio and visual from the handheld unit to lead to the exact location of the homing tag.

The Alert mode lets you set up a kind of invisible boundary that warns you -- either through vibration or an audio alert through the handheld unit -- that a homing tag has gone outside the set perimeter.

This is the Loc8tor Plus Pack that comes with:

  • 1 x Loc8tor Handheld
  • 3 x Mini Homing Tags
  • 1 x Panic Homing Tag
  • Batteries
  • Supplied with Locate & Alert Mode

And if you want a simpler and more inexpensive model you can get the Loc8tor Lite. The advantage of this model is that the receiver is very small -- credit card sized.

The range is a little less that the regular Loc8ator at 400 feet, depending upon the environment. However, if kitty tends to stay relatively close by then this device can still be very effective for pinpointing your cat's exact location.

Cat Tracking Collars

Cat tracking collars are -- interestingly enough -- hard to find.  Unlike dogs that are large enough to carry a GPS dog tracking collar or even a long range radio tracking collar, domestic house cats are normally not large or strong enough to carry the electronics and battery power supply to support those devices.

There are sites advertising GPS tracking collars for cats.  However, they only seem to be available in Europe so if you are in the United States then there does not seem to be a GPS tracking collar solution for you -- at least not yet.

Also, the other problem is that even the European GPS tracking collars are on the large side, weighing between 89g and 110g. 80g is probably the largest device that you would want to put on your cat, unless it is unusually large or strong.

There is another problem GPS tracking collars in general, and that is the monthly costs associated with it.  GPS systems typically use the same technology as the cellular phone system and there are associated monthly costs to use the network, just like any cellular phone.

So with today's technology it would seem that the best option for cats is to use a short range radio tracking collar.  The advantage of using radio frequencies is that you avoid monthly fees.   And the advantage of using a short range device is that you can make the electronics small and light enough for a cat.

The slight disadvantage to using radio tracking is that you would not be able to pinpoint the device exactly since the radio signal is not transmitting coordinates like a GPS device.

However, given the right tracking system you could have a directional tracking device that would tell you the general direction and relative distance.

Today I know of only one such device in the US and that is called the CatLocator.
